ENGLAND’S Rugby World Cup winner Ben Kay was the guest speaker at the Sportsman Lunch in Bromsgrove last Friday, writes Daisy Dillon.

The event – at Bromsgrove Rugby Club’s (RFC) Finstall Park – was attended by more than 300 local business people.

Ben, who was in the World Cup winning squad in 2003, shared many of his personal anecdotes from his former rugby career as well as some of his moments off the field.

The event, which has become an annual tradition, was hosted by Phil Steel – the renowned pitchside reporter for BBC Wales and also featured a Peter Kay tribute act.

As well as showing a deep-rooted passion and support for rugby within the Bromsgrove business community, the event also gave those gathered a chance to network and connect with other like-minded individuals and companies.

Bromsgrove RFC president Dave Wellington said he was overwhelmed by the tremendous turn-out and the support showed by the local business community.

“It is reassuring to witness such a strong bond between sports and business in Bromsgrove, funds raised here will enable our club to continue to develop rugby talent at grassroots level and futureproof our club for generations to come.”

Bromsgrove RFC is now busy organising its very own FINFEST, a festival celebrating local street food vendors, a rugby 7s competition and local musicians.

The event takes place next Saturday, July 8. Tickets are still available, but do expect to sell out – visit the Bromsgrove RFC Facebook page for more.
