Droitwich Air Cadets who attend South Bromsgrove High School have action-packed day at RAF base

TWO MEMBERS of 2516 Droitwich Royal Air Force Air Cadets Squadron attended an action-packed day at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire.

Cpl Katie Rogers and Cadet Beth Banham, who both attend South Bromsgrove High School, were among 2,000 from across the Midlands to attend the RAF Air Cadets Muster.

They participated in RAF-related activities, including a journey above the Oxfordshire countryside in an RAF Chinook helicopter.

Several aircraft involved in the Trooping of the Colour flypast in London for King Charles III’s birthday routed over Benson and the cadets were treated to displays by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster, F35 Lightning fast jets, RAF training aircraft and Chinook helicopters.

The day culminated with an address to all the cadets present, from Air Marshal Richard Maddison, the Deputy Chief of the Air Staff of the Royal Air Force, followed by a low-level helicopter flypast.

Air Experience Flying is a highlight activity and, in July, four cadets from Droitwich Squadron will take to the skies at RAF Little Rissington gliding school.

A further ten cadets will experience powered flying during the autumn at RAF Cosford.

However, flying is just one of the fun and exciting activities air cadets can participate in.

Droitwich Squadron has a packed activity programme including the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, sport, weekend training camps, and a successful band that supports several events in Droitwich, including the annual Remembrance Sunday parade.

There is a training syllabus that cadets undertake that covers first aid, radio, leadership and cyber training.

The squadron will be holding an open evening at 7pm on July 18 at the Cadet building in Heritage Way, Droitwich. The event will enable parents and prospective cadets to see the range of activities on offer.

Cadets need to be a minimum of 12 years old and already in year eight at school to join.
