Countdown begins to Bromsgrove's annual Court Leet Fair Day

Bromsgrove Editorial 16th Jun, 2023 Updated: 18th Jun, 2023   0

THE ANNUAL Bromsgrove Fair Day will take place next Saturday, June 24.

The event will begin with a parade by the Bromsgrove Court Leet from Housman Hall at 10.30am to and along the High Street to celebrate the Charter awarded to the town in 1199 by King John permitting a market and a fair on the feast of St John, which falls on Midsummer’s Day.

Bailiff Robert Bird will lead the procession with Shirley Pipe Band at the front and the Court Leet in full robes and regalia, plus members from other local Courts and guests.

At the Housman Statue at around 11am the Bailiff will proclaim the 1199 Charter.

As well as the usual Saturday markets, local traders and charities will attend the Court Leet Street Market, many in traditional costumes to complement the theme of the event.

Court Leet Market Master David Coulson said: “We are delighted to be bringing an additional 14 market stalls to the town for Fair Day this year.

“It’s always great to see the costumes worn and The Sumners Cup will be awarded to the best dressed.”

Bailiff Robert Bird is the son of the Chris Bird, who recently celebrated 50 years as Lord of the Manor.

Robert said: “I’m really looking forward to Fair Day and celebrating the important traditions of our town and it is wonderful to be Bailiff in this special year for my father.

“I hope lots of people will attend to see the parade and assizes taking place and to join us in celebrating Bromsgrove’s historic past. “

Everyone is welcome to attend and support town businesses and the markets.
