CONFIRMED - National Express West Midlands bus strike ends with deal

Bromsgrove Editorial 25th Mar, 2023 Updated: 25th Mar, 2023   0

THE NATIONAL Express West Midlands bus strike which has been going on since Monday has now ended after drivers reached a deal with bosses.

The industrial action was ‘indefinite’ when it began as drivers strove for better pay.

An improved offer from NX West Midlands was put to Unite the union on Thursday.

And it has now been confirmed it has been accepted.

The initial offer of 14.3 per cent with with increases to Christmas Eve pay, New Year’s Day pay and accident pay, tabled last weekend, was rejected.

But on Thursday the bus operator’s bosses upped it to 16.2 per cent, a formalisation to existing interim overtime rates and increases to Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day pay and accident pay.

It will be welcome news for thousands of bus users across Bromsgrove and Birmingham caught up in the dispute.

NXWM runs the 144A service from Bromsgrove to Longbridge which will be extending to Northfield and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital next month.

A National Express West Midlands spokesperson said: “We are pleased the drivers have voted in favour of accepting the offer.

“We apologise to our customers and the communities we serve for the significant disruption and inconvenience this has caused over the last few weeks.

“We are pleased to be able to put this behind us and focus on delivering a bus service customers can rely on.”

Services will continue to be reduced today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday).

But normal services will resume on Monday, March 27.
