THE BIRMINGHAM 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay will come to Bromsgrove on July 23 on its final journey through England.
The Baton Relay will be at Sanders Park at 8.59am around the lake where demonstrations will be on show from Bromsgrove Gymnastics Club, the Music Bus from Seven Arts and Bromsgrove Festival.
It will also commemorate the legacy of the Bandstand, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
Members of the public are being urged to get involved with the celebrations and experience the buzz of the Birmingham 2022 build-up.
This will be the 16th Queen’s Baton Relay which brings together communities across the Commonwealth.
The relay will travel across England for 29 days, visiting hundreds of villages, towns and cities before arriving at the opening ceremony on July 28.
Between 40 and 130 people will carry the baton each day.
Rubery’s Leanna Horne was nominated by Bromsgrove District Council to be one of the Batonbearers for her contributions to disability and sport in the area.
The 34-year-old has been unable to compete in her chosen sport, Club Throw, since before the pandemic but is hoping to return to the competitive circuit for the start of the 2023 season.
She said she was shocked to be nominated as a Batonbearer, adding that she hopes to continue to inspire others to follow their sporting dream.
Leanna is a volunteer performer at the Commonwealth Games and in athlete services.
She said although her sport isn’t featured at the games, she feels very much involved with this historic event.
“I am absolutely honoured to have been nominated for this especially as it has been a quiet couple of years for me in a sporting capacity.
“I want to continue to highlight the facilities available in the Midlands and also help to improve those where they are not so good, which could inspire other people to get involved, enjoy and succeed in a sport.
“Being a Batonbearer will help me to do this and I look forward to being a part of the amazing atmosphere.”
Bromsgrove District Council Leader Coun Karen May added: “Having this multi-sport, international event held just miles from our district is brilliant and we have lots of plans to make it a time to remember.
“I hope all of our residents proudly take the to streets to cheer the Batonbearers on and I am delighted that this Council has nominated Leanna who has worked tirelessly to promote disability and sport across the District and beyond.
“She continues to be an inspiration to us all.”
