AN AFGHAN refugee who moved to Bromsgrove has won Student of the Year at HoW College after undertaking a course there, writes Lucy Belfield
Parwiz Amiri was forced to flee when the Taliban took over Kabul, bravely escaping by being airlifted to safety.
He was part of the dramatic scenes at the capital’s airport two years ago.
Parwiz, who is 34 and served as a qualified nurse practitioner for the British Army in Afghanistan for 13 years, studied English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at the college.
As Parwiz settled into his news home with his wife Fawzia, also a trained nurse, and six-year-old daughter Behishta, he has been supported by Bromsgrove and Redditch Welcome Refugees (BRWR).
The group has provided friendship and both practical and financial support.
The college praised Parwiz’s dedication and commitment to improving his English and the quality of his work.
A HoW College spokesperson said: “He’s a really popular member of the group with a ready smile and a cheery word for everyone.
“Extremely conscientious and keen to learn, with a great sense of humour, and a complete asset to the group, Parwiz is a worthy recipient of this award.”
Parwiz, who was delighted with his prize, said: “I’m very happy about this award.
“I worked very hard and the teacher helped me a lot – she’s very kind and I really appreciate it, always encouraging.”
Parwiz is currently employed at a Bromsgrove care home but hopes to work as a hospital nurse once he has passed English language examinations.
