Charity minibus service for the elderly needs donations to help pay for new bus

A CHARITY minibus service used as a lifeline by many of Bromsgrove’s elderly residents is appealing for donations to help pay for a new bus.

Bromsgrove Minibus for the Elderly’s current vehicle is 15-years-old, has completed more than 110,000 miles and is in desperate need of replacement.

Volunteer driver and trustee Robert Trigger said: “We need a new, more modern minibus with an up to date wheelchair anchoring system to help our residents.

“Our current bus is beginning to become too expensive to maintain mechanically and the bodywork is also in need of some attention.”

The service, which transports elderly residents to care homes, local restaurants, places of interest or to simply get a breath of fresh air, has been running for 34 years.

It was set up in June 1985 by four trustees Nora Byng, Margaret Fishley, David Hughes and Jack Grantham who felt many residents were becoming isolated due to a lack of transport in the town.

Mr Trigger added: “We have already raised £17,500 from some trusts, including £10,000 from the National lottery Community Fund.

“The total costing for the project is in the region of £27,000 to £35,000.

“There are some reserves we can use towards the project however this would leave us with little or no contingency funds.”
