Celebrate the coronation by getting your items fixed at bank holiday Bromsgrove Repair Cafe

RESIDENTS can celebrate the Coronation by having their items fixed for free at Bromsgrove Repair Cafe.

This month’s event takes place from 2pm to 5pm on bank holiday Monday, May 8, at St Andrew’s Church Hall in Charford.

People are urged, before thinking about throwing out broken household items, to consider if they can be repaired.

The cafe is aimed at reducing the number of items going to landfill and, as well as electrical and electronic appliances, the team can also fix jewellery, toys, furniture and lamps.

Repair cafes aim for people to ‘repair things together’ and also provide a place where valuable practical knowledge can be passed on – either to those bringing items or their teenage children or grandchildren.

The repairers are all volunteers, many have retired, but all enjoy the company of other repairers. More volunteers are always being sought.

While repairs are free, people who have their items repaired are asked to consider making a donation to help the repair cafe cover its costs and towards its future.

Ros Cooke, from the Bromsgrove Repair Cafe, said: “There are hundreds of repair  cafes in Britain and across Europe – the first one started up in the Netherlands.

“Here in Bromsgrove, we have mended many beloved but broken items.

“We have put smiles on people’s faces, be it reattaching nearly 2ft high dolly Holly’s legs, mending grandpa’s old radio or making the mechanical bird in a cage rotate and chirp again.”

People can also enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a piece of home-made cake while they wait.

Most goods are repairable although there will be some beyond repair.

People can email [email protected] or visit facebook.com/repaircafebromsgrove for more informations and any questions.

In and from June, the Repair Cafe will return to All Saints Church, Burcot Lane, on the first Saturday of every month.
