CAMPAIGN - Make sure you're 'ID OK on polling day'

Bromsgrove Editorial 3rd Feb, 2023 Updated: 3rd Feb, 2023   0

WITH the local elections in England now just 90 days away, we are launching a new campaign to ensure as many people as possible know about the need for photographic ID at polling stations.

We want to make sure you are ‘ID OK on polling day’.

For the first time in UK history, people wanting to vote in person will need photographic ID.

The first time this will be used will be during the local elections across England on May 4.

Several items will be accepted:

  • A UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport
  • A driving licence issued by the UK, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or an EEA state,
  • A blue badge
  • A concessionary travel pass, such as an older person’s bus pass

The full list of accepted photo ID can be found on the Electoral Commission website at www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voterID

So what if you don’t have one of the accepted forms of ID?

People who don’t have the accepted forms can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate which will enable them to vote in person at a polling station – the certificate will be a substitute for the other accepted forms.

People could also opt to apply for a postal vote.

Visit electoralcommision.org.uk for more on the certificate and how to obtain one and on postal voting.

So why did we start this campaign?

There has been a lot of criticism of the government for bringing in this legislation, as many people feel it could exclude some voters from casting their ballot.

As it is now law, we want to make sure everyone knows what is required of them when they go to vote.

Only then can everyone who wants to cast their ballot will be able to.

For elections to be effective and a fair reflection of public opinion, high turnouts are needed.

We hope people will spread the word to family and friends of all ages to ensure they and those close to them will be ID OK on Polling Day.
