Bromsgrove's Jayne battles CFS with January walking challenge in memory of her dad

A BROMSGROVE woman who is battling Chronic Fatigure Syndrome (CFS) has been walking 26.2miles throughout January  to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Research and in memory of her dad.

Jayne Lawrence is completing  her feat to collect the cash for the cause after her dad Arthur Purcell died almost two years ago.

He was diagnosed in November 2020 with prostate cancer and passed away just three months later.

The charity’s challenge tasks participants with the ‘Run the Month: Marathon Edition’ as the 26.2miles is equal to the marathon distance.

Jayne said: “My dad also had dementia and never complained of having any problems – sadly by the time it was caught it had spread too far.”

Jayne was diagnosed with CFS in August 2016 which had a knock-on effect with work, family life and a lack of social life.

Prior to this challenge she has built up her fitness at Pure Gym in Bromsgrove, with the help of fitness trainer Amie Hutchins.

She added: “Going back to the gym and finding Amie has helped me greatly.

“It has been a slow process and it has cut a lot of pain out especially in my legs.

“Having more energy has meant I can take part in this great event, raising funds and awareness of a cancer that is treatable if caught early.

“Don’t get me wrong there are still days I oversleep, cant walk up the stairs or go shopping but life has improved.”

Jayne now has just seven miles left to complete before Tuesday, January 31.

Ted Marriott, Prostate Cancer Research’s events and community assistant, said: “One in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst men.

“It’s for that reason Prostate Cancer Research are working tirelessly to fund some of the most ground-breaking scientific research across the country, but we can only do that thanks to phenomenal fundraisers like Jayne.”
