COMMUNITY leaders from Worcestershire have visited the HB9 Harry Bennett Foundation ahead of its sixth anniversary, writes Toby Almond.
The foundation was set up in memory of Harry, from Bromsgrove, who died from sepsis at the age of 16 on January 17, 2020.
During their visit, Ian Smith, the High Sheriff of Worcestershire, Coun Samuel Evans, Chairman of Bromsgrove Council and Coun Sam Ammar spent time learning about HB9’s work across the district.
The foundation supports local young people and sports teams to help them access sporting opportunities which provide benefits to physical and mental wellbeing.
Harry’s passing had a profound impact on his family, friends and the South Bromsgrove High School community.
His parents, Andy and Yvette Bennett, established the foundation to ensure his legacy continued in a way that reflected what mattered most to him.
The charity also offers financial support for equipment, training and help establishing new clubs and teams.
The charity is named in tribute to Harry’s passion for sport and his iconic shirt number 9, worn as a centre forward in football and a scrum half in rugby.
Andy said: “As we remember Harry and mark six years since we lost him, this visit meant a great deal.
“We’re grateful for the encouragement shown and for the support in helping us spread the word about HB9 so more local people can benefit from the lasting legacy Harry left behind.”
Ian Smith, High Sheriff of Worcestershire, said: “It was a very special visit.
“I loved hearing how Harry’s family has turned the most heartbreaking tragedy for any parent into a force for good, supporting a wide variety of people, helping them benefit from the power of sport and the life long bonds it creates.
“It was a privilege to meet Andy and learn about the legacy of his remarkable boy.”
