Bromsgrove's Basement Project among charities supported by West Mercia cadets

NORTH Worcestershire Police cadets spread some cheer around the county earlier this month by handing out support to three local charities.

Each year, cadet cohorts are allocated funds of between £1000 and £2000 by the West Mercia Police community fund which they can donate to good causes.

Bromsgrove’s Basement project, which supports young homeless people and their children in the area, was among the selected charities.

They received donations for young children such as nappies and wipes, as well as cleaning products and food items.

Redditch’s Batchley Support Group received food donations from the cadets to help them to continue to support those in need through the cost-of-living crisis.

Brookside Family Centre in Wyre Forest also received the support.

Previous years have seen the cadets make Christmas meals for a nominated care home or supported local food banks.

The theme this year focused on reducing vulnerability and easing the impact of the cost of living crisis.

PC Neil Sharpe from the North Worcestershire Youth Engagement and Cadet Team said: “Each cadet had a chance to suggest where we should direct our bids and each cadet wanted to really help their community.

“These are young people volunteering their free time and who, like police officers and police staff, have a passionate sense of community and public service.

“I’m so proud of what they have achieved this year for those less fortunate in their communities and in these cadets I see bright futures both for policing and for the local people they seek to support.”
