Bromsgrove's Andy set to complete his 84-mile canal towpath trek to raise funds for Cancer Research UK

A BROMSGROVE walker has been taking on his latest hike throughout May, walking 84 miles in total along the Worcester to Birmingham to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Andy Frizzell undertook the series of walks every Tuesday, starting off on the stretch from Birmingham to Tardebigge (around 16 miles) on May 2.

On May 9, he walked from Tardebigge to Worcester’s Diglis Basin (14 miles) and then from Worcester to Bewdley on the Severn Way on May 16.

Arguably the toughest sections were last Tuesday, May 23, and this week’s (May 30) where Andy finished the trek in Majors Green.

Andy chose the charity after his wife had a cancerous tumour removed last year and she is currently undergoing immunotherapy which Cancer Research UK helped develop.

Andy said: “The hardest stretch was Bewdley to Romsley which was around 24 miles – going over the Clent Hills after walking 18 miles already was pretty tiring.

“Overall though it all went really well and we’re nearing our fund-raising target.”

Andy set himself a target of more than £1,000 and, as the Standard went to press yesterday, he had raised more than £904 for the cause.
