Bromsgrove upcycler calls on people to think about what they can do for the planet ahead of Earth Day 2021

A BROMSGROVE woman who is celebrating the first anniversary of her small upcycling business is urging people across the district to think about how they can make small changes to help the planet.

The calls from Karen Caddick from BLoC handmade come on the eve of Earth Day which takes place tomorrow (Thursday, April 22).

It all began for Karen, who lives in Catshill, when she made a denim jacket for herself entirely from charity shop jeans.

She said: “It is still – to date – the best item of clothing I’ve made for myself.”

Working on that made her think about what else she could make from unwanted items so she returned to the charity shop for supplies and set about making a handbag.

A couple of attempts later she produced a bag she was happy with and, after receiving some really good feedback from her friends, she carried on creating until she had enough to launch her business, website and a blog last April.

She added: “The last year has made me realise how it has never been more important for us to be kinder to the planet than it is now.

“And it is not a case of everyone throwing out all their plastic items and doing anything drastic – there are lots of small easy changes we can all make to help.

“A lot of people doing a little would make a huge difference.”
