FOR the first time ever women, men and children will all be able to take part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at Arrow Valley Park later this year.
People in Redditch and Bromsgrove are being encouraged to get January off to a great start by signing up to the 5k and 10k events which will be held on Sunday, June 9.
Kate Bevan, Cancer Research UK’s local event manager, said: “For more than 25 years our events have been women-only.
“But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone has the chance to participate together.”
Race for Life events are known for being uplifting, fun, colourful and emotional experiences.
They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which gives patients in Redditch access to the latest treatments.
“You don’t have to be sporty to take part,” said Kate, “It’s not about competing against anyone else.
“It’s all about meeting new people and raising money in whatever way you can.
“It’s fantastic to see like-minded people get together and remember loved ones who lost to cancer or to celebrate the lives of those who have survived.”
One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetime.
Sadly this means nearly everyone is touched by the disease, either directly or through a loved one or a friend.
Kate added: “The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before.
Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.”
