Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid announces he will not stand at next general election

BROMSGROVE MP Sajid Javid has announced he will not be standing at the next general election.

The former Chancellor, Home Secretary and Health Secretary said – while the next national vote could be another two years away – the Conservative Party had asked MPs to signal their intentions early so it could prepare for the campaign.

This, he added, had accelerated his decision making.

In a letter to Paul Uppal, the Chairman of the Bromsgrove Conservative Association, Mr Javid said: “It has been a decision I have wrestled with for some time but I have ultimately concluded not to stand again for what would be my fifth election.

“I am very proud of what we have achieved for Bromsgrove District and of my work in Parliament and Government.”

He added the decision would not mark the end of his work in Parliament or Government nor be the end of his Parliamentary activity, particularly for the causes he cared deeply about.

And he said it would not impact his duties as a local MP for his Bromsgrove constituents.

“Being the local MP and serving in Government has been the privilege of my life and I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to serve.

“I always sought to make decisions in the national interest and in line with my values and I can only hope my best was sufficient.”

He concluded by saying he would continue to support his friend the Prime Minister and the people of Bromsgrove in any way he could.

Rishi Sunak posted on Twitter that he ‘was sad to see his good friend stepping back from politics.

He added: “He’s been a proud champion of enterprise and opportunity during his time in Government and on the backbenches – particularly for the people of Bromsgrove.

“May the Force be with you, Saj.”

Sajid Javid’s political career

Sajid Javid was elected to Bromsgrove at the May 2010 general election and has increased his majority at the subsequent votes in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Under David Cameron, he was made the Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport in April 2014 – a post he held until May 2015.

He left the role to become Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and President of the Board of Trade, remaining in that post until July 2016.

From July 2016 to April 2018, he was made the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government by then Prime Minister Theresa May.

In April 2018 he took up the role of Home Secretary, staying in post until July 2019.

Under Boris Johnson he was made Chancellor of the Exchequer in  July 2019 – the cabinet role many felt he was best-suited to with his banking background.

But in February 2020 because of controversial Government decisions, at the hands of Johnson and special advisor Dominic Cummings, where it was reported he was asked to ditch his team so another one chosen by Number 10 could be brought in, Mr Javid resigned without even having had chance to unveil a budget.

Then in June 2021 he took up the post of Secretary of State for Health and Social Care during the pandemic – arguably the biggest healthcare crisis facing the country in recent times.

He held that post for almost two-and-a-half years – until February 2022 – where he said he could no longer work under Johnson ‘in good conscience’.

It followed an apology from Johnson for appointing Chris Pincher to the role of Deputy Chief Whip after admitting it was a ‘mistake’ in light of complaints about previous misconduct.

A flurry of resignations followed and the domino effect ultimately led to Johnson himself resigning.
