BROMSGROVE historian Max Keen entertained members at the Lickey Hills Rotary Club with the story of Alfred the Great – was he really Alfred the Fortune as great tails suggest?
On November 28, viewers were taken back in time with Max by dressing in wigs, helmets, chain mail and varnishing axes, spears and a shield to represent his character.
The group learnt how Alfred became King despite being fourth in line to the throne, how he benefitted from the Vikings splitting their army and about a crucial storm that destroyed a fleet carrying 3 000 Viking reserves.
