RESIDENTS gathered at Bromsgrove’s AE Housman statue on Friday (March 24) to commemorate the legendary poet’s birthday.
The Housman Society was joined at the ceremony by representatives of Bromsgrove District Council and Town Crier Kevin Ward along with members of the Bromsgrove Society and Bromsgrove Arts Alive.
This year’s event took place two days before Housman’s actual birthday – March 26, 1859.
AE Housman was born in the town, grew up in Perry Hall and was a pupil at Bromsgrove School.
After studying at Oxford, he became a Professor of Latin at University College, London and published his famous collection of poems in 1896.
He moved to Cambridge in 1911, spending the rest of his life there as a Professor of Latin and a Fellow of Trinity College before passing away in 1936.
The Housman Society was founded 50 years ago and promotes his life and works along with other members of his family.
