Bromsgrove District Council's chairman announced

COUN Caroline Spencer has been named as Bromsgrove District Council’s new chairman.

Coun Spencer was voted into the role at the annual meeting on Wednesday (May 19) along with Coun Helen Jones who was made the new vice-chairman.

During the evening Coun Margaret Sherrey was also re-instated as the council’s new leader, following the election.

Kit Taylor will be her deputy. The council’s new cabinet roles were also announced – Coun Sherrey will now be responsible for health and wellbeing, partnerships and community safety while Coun Taylor will look after housing and planning.




Coun Rita Dent has been put in charge of economic development, regeneration and the town centre.

The new portfolio holder for finance, ICT and HR is Coun Geoff Denaro while Coun Peter Whittaker was made responsible for environmental services and WRS.


During the meeting Coun Spencer, who is taking on the role as the chairman for the second time, also selected her two charities of the year which will be Libby Mae’s Little Angels and the North Worcestershire Basement Project.

Retiring Civic Head John Ruck was also awarded a medal for his commitment to the council. He said: “It has been a great pleasure to serve the council this last year.

It is probably the best thing I have done whilst I have been in politics and I have been doing it since I was 27.”

Coun June Griffiths, the former chairman, said: “It has been so pleasant to serve you for five years. “I have really enjoyed being here for those five years, they have been good years.

“Thank you very much for all the support you have given me.

“I would also like to thank all the members of the council.”

Coun Spencer added: “I am honoured to be asked again to be the chairman of this council. “I am looking forward to engaging and meeting people and representing Bromsgrove and the district.”

Louise Halley, Coun Spencer’s proud daughter was also at the meeting to celebrate the announcement of the chairman. S

he said: “Mum is very social and has always been very involved in Bromsgrove. “She is somebody who does not do anything by half measures and when she takes on a task she will see it through to the end.”
