BROMSGROVE company Ecl-ips has become one of the first in the UK to offer a detection device that could help schools wanting to tackle vaping.
The HALO smart sensor was demonstrated by Ecl-ips in several school conferences over the last few months.
The sensor had the most enquiries from schools of any new Ecl-ips product.
It has already been proven in the US market where there has been a vaping ‘epidemic’ among young people.
The HALO smart sensor has other features including abnormal sound detection meaning it can pick up aggressive behaviour by students allowing teachers to clamp down on fights and bullying.
Vaping has been promoted as a safer tobacco alternative in the UK but there is evidence young people could be more attracted to vaping because of social media.
A study by Australia’s University of Queensland last year found that 63 per cent of videos posted on TikTok between January 2019 and November 2020 portrayed vaping positively.
These videos have been viewed 1.1billion times between them.
Research by British charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) showed that the product packaging and ‘candy’ vaping flavours such as bubble gum made them more appealing to young people.
