Bromsgrove climate action launches campaign to tackle energy crisis

Bromsgrove Editorial 6th Apr, 2023   0

A BROMSGROVE group set up to combat climate change engaged with the local community as it launched its new campaign aimed at tackling the current energy crisis.

Bromsgrove Climate Action (BCA) held a pop-up stall in Bromsgrove town centre to discuss environmental matters with local residents and to launch its new Warm Homes Campaign.

The campaign, which can be supported via a petition, calls on MP Sajid Javid and the government to address the issues of high energy bills, the need for renewable energy and the problem of poorly insulated homes.

It states that, even with the government’s price freeze, the average energy bill had almost doubled in the past 12 months, adding many people were left with the difficult decision of whether to heat their homes or eat.

The petition calls for urgent immediate support for those in need and a new emergency programme to insulate heat-leaking homes – highlighting insulation as the cheapest and easiest way to permanently reduce bills and cut emissions.

It also calls for an energy system powered by cheap, green home-made renewables to end the need for expensive and polluting gas.

Judy Tipper, from BCA, said many interesting conversations were had at the last pop-up stall and there was much support from those stopping by.

“Thank you to all those who stopped to talk and to sign our petition, and to fill in our survey.”

The group will be back in the high street with another pop-up stall next month – date to be confirmed.

Judy added: “Please come and talk to us about this and any other environmental issues.”

Mr Javid said: “I understand the pressure many residents in Bromsgrove district are facing with their energy bills.

“Putin’s illegal war has caused incredible challenges, but I welcome the significant amount of support the Government has provided – including through the Energy Price Guarantee, which has just been extended.

“Of course, it is also important we increase our energy security in the long term.

“New investments in renewable energy are critical to that and I continue to support this cause in Parliament.”
