BIRD-LOVERS across Bromsgrove, Rubery and Droitwich are being urged to get their binoculars ready for the annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch which takes place this weekend.

The world’s biggest garden wildlife survey, now in its 40th year, kicks off on Saturday and runs until Monday, January 28.

More than 8million birds were recorded across the UK during the 2018  Birdwatch.

Members of Bromsgrove’s Chandler Court Care Home will be joined by children from Castle Nursery over the three days, where they will be making bird cakes, crafting bird feeders and having a bird quiz.

Chandler Court Home manager Joanne Gill said: “The event provides a great opportunity to get outside and connect with nature and is something which has many therapeutic benefits, especially with those living with dementia.

“It’s a real sensory experience for residents, who have the opportunity to take in the sights, sounds and textures of a crisp January day with our feathered friends.”

The Big Schools Birdwatch has been running since January 2, with the six-week event aimed at getting youngsters involved with nature finishing on February 22.

Around 100,000 birds were spotted by 60,000 schoolchildren last year when the Big Schools birdwatch celebrated its 15th anniversary.

Organisers are hoping an 10,000 more children will be getting out their binoculars this year.

Public Affairs Manager for RSPB Midlands, David Sheldon said the schools event was a great chance for children to get outside and learn about some of the fascinating birds which share our spaces.
