A BRAVE mum who was diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer while she was pregnant is seeking help from residents to continue potentially life-saving treatment abroad.
Katy Dawson, from Cofton Hackett, has been raising funds to travel to Germany for ongoing treatment of triple negative breast cancer.
With each trip costing £21,300, Katy needs to return every two to three months for boosters.
The 37-year-old, who is mum to Aurelia, five, and Evan, one, underwent an immediate mastectomy at 35 weeks pregnant and has been travelling back and forth for treatment since August last year.
She said: “I am convinced the German treatment has helped me massively.
“I have seen women in my position at the beginning die within a few months of their chemotherapy finishing in the UK, it has broken my heart, for them, and for me, many times over.
“I don’t think I’m especially important and to most people who are aware of my situation I’m possibly just a passing thought but I do know that I am the whole world to Aurelia and Evan and this is just not right.”
Since receiving the treatment in Germany, Katy said she is 18 months clear and is taking on advice and alternative therapies.
“Triple negative breast cancer needs so much more attention and research,” added Katy.
“It is the poor relation of hormone positive and HER 2+ breast cancer and it affects predominantly women of child-bearing age.
“To be told you are going to die young is the hardest, most cruel thing imaginable.
“I am desperate for more tomorrows with my family, please help me continue to receive the targeted and progressive treatment available abroad.
“I fear it really is my only hope.”
