BIRMINGHAM Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust will be receiving over £52million as part of the government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.
The money will enable them to install clean heating and energy efficiency measures.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust will be receiving a further £35.6million to fit low carbon heating and energy efficiency measures at Solihull, Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands and Good Hope hospitals.
The government scheme will provide grants totalling nearly £134million to 15 public sector organisations around the West Midlands for the installation of 19 heat decarbonisation and energy efficiency projects.
These will include hospitals, schools, libraries, museums and leisure centres.
Other beneficiaries of the scheme include West Midlands Police who are using their almost £260,000 to replace old gas-fired boilers at Stechford Police Station with air source heat pumps.
The installations will cut fossil fuel use and save on energy bills.
Decarbonising public buildings is expected to save local authorities, public bodies and taxpayers an average of £650million a year on energy bills up to 2037.
Its part of the aim to reduce the 2017 levels of emissions from public sector buildings by 75% in the next 15 years.
The funding is the first part of phase 3 of the scheme, with £1.425billion set to be allocated over the next three years.
Phases one and two saw £1.075billion spent on decarbonising the public sector.
Previous funding has included a £3million grant to Staffordshire County Council to decarbonise 22 school buildings and a further £3.3million project by Academies Enterprise Trust, which provided energy efficiency upgrades in six of its West Midlands academies.
Business and Energy Minister Lord Callanan said: “Installing low carbon systems to heat our civic buildings will help to shield public sector organisations across the West Midlands from a costly reliance on fossil fuels, especially at a time of high global prices.
“We are making the taxpayer’s public buildings cheaper to run, heat and cool.”
