Barnt Green tennis coach launches campaign to get more people to take up the game

A BARNT Green tennis coach has launched a campaign in a bid to get people of all ages to take up the sport.

Paul Cowie wants everyone from tiny tots to grandparents to pick up a racket and has started two new programmes at the Lickey Hills Golf Course from tomorrow until May 4.

Tennis for Kids, backed by the Lawn Tennis Association, is aimed at children aged from four to 11 and Tennis Xpress is for adult beginners.

Paul believes the children’s session is the perfect way to get them away from their computer screens.

“Since the scheme was launched in 2015, Barnt Green Sports Club has been a big supporter and we’ve seen for ourselves the impact it makes.

“One of our original participants, Jack Hartley-Dalley has continued to play regularly and he’s now been selected to train in the county squad, which is a major achievement.”

Paul hopes to attract even more budding enthusiasts as he believes some beginners can be intimidated by traditional surroundings, such as sports clubs and leisure centres.

“Each session is innovative and fun so the youngsters see the sport as enjoyable, rather than as being something that their parents are forcing them to do.

“Obviously I’d like to think that once they master the basics they stay with tennis and play it throughout their lives.”

The six-week course costs £25 and includes a special Tennis for Kids racket, a ball set, and personalised T-shirt delivered right to the child’s front door.

Tennis Xpress, which also runs for six weeks and costs £30, is aimed at people who haven’t played tennis before, or have not played in a long time.

“It’s an easy way for adult beginners to get into the game.

“Participants will be taught new skills as well as being shown how to serve, rally and score, so that by the end, they can enjoy matches with their friends and family.

“One of the great things about tennis is that you can play it any age – so kids can have a game with their parents or grandparents.

“These two courses are designed with this in mind so that families can get fit and healthy together and have some fun at the same time.”
