Annual reunion for ex Garringtons workers to be held at Catshill Club on Friday

THE ANNUAL reunion for ex Garringtons workers will be held at Catshill Club next Friday, March 30.

At the event, which starts at 7.30pm, the names of the 70 former workers who have lost their lives since the closure will be read out and former employees will be reminiscing about life at the plant.

Garringtons was the largest drop forge in Europe and Bromsgrove’s biggest employer before it closed in 2002.

At its peak it employed more than 2,000 people in the town and when it closed 400 jobs were lost.

Garringtons stood on what is now the Breme Park estate in Aston Fields.

Retiring workers found out their pensions were worth nothing and embarked on a seven-year fight with the Government which finally agreed to reimburse pensions up to 90 per cent.

But there are matters which still need resolving and the fight continues.

The organisers of the reunion also want people skilled in computers to help them set up a website for former Garringtons employees.

Call Mick Ball on 01527 832252 or Pat Proudfoot on 01527 873327 for more on the reunion or helping with the website.
