Annual Bromsgrove Chrysanthemum show celebrates its 75th anniversary

Bromsgrove Editorial 11th Sep, 2018   0

THE ANNUAL Chrysanthemum show at Bromsgrove’s Burcot Garden Centre, Alcester Road, will take place on Thursday, September 13.

The event, organised by the Shirley Chrysanthemum Society, is celebrating its 75th year and is open to both members of the society and non-members.

Exhibits must be on the show bench by 11.45am and judging will take place at midday.

There will be 13 Chrysanthemum classes and one class for arrangements.

The group’s treasurer John Rogers said the cold spring and the heatwaves had not helped the group’s preparations.

“It has been a tricky year for Chrysanthemum growers because they hate the heat.

“Some have bloomed earlier, others later and the flowers have been much smaller.”

Last year there were 80 blooms and the organisers are hoping for a similar response this year.

“We are looking forward to seeing people’s displays and it should be a great event again,” added John.

Anyone wanting to go see the displays or find out about Chrysanthemum growing can go along in the morning to have a closer look at the varieties and chat to members of the society.

John said: “We could definitely do with more growers, whether they be members or not so it would be great to inspire some people to keep the show going.”
