ACTOR Hugh Grant has hit back over claims he refused to shake Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid’s hand at a film premiere.

The Chancellor recently told the Evening Standard that he recognised Grant, put his hand out and said ‘lovely to meet you’ but had his offer rejected.

He said Grant told him he wouldn’t shake his hand ‘because you didn’t support my friends in the Hacked Off Campaign’ which was established in 2011 in response to phone-hacking scandals.

On Twitter, Grant said he refused the handshake because he felt Mr Javid was dismissive of press abuse victims.

He said his exact words to Mr Javid were: “If you don’t mind, I won’t shake your hand because you were rude and dismissive to the victims of press abuse when you met them as culture secretary.”

Grant added that the victims in question were not celebrities but people with personal family tragedies who had been abused by sections of the press.

Mr Javid was culture secretary between 2014 and 2015.
