DEMOLITION works on a section of the Bilberry Centre will begin after the building suffered extensive fire damage in a suspected arson attack.

The 1970’s extension of the building will be demolished however Birmingham City Council have moved to ease concerns about the tearing down of the entire site.

Birmingham City Council, who own the iconic and historical building on Rose Hill, have assured local Cofton Hackett Parish Council that a demolition notice posted on the site relates to the removal of the 1970’s extension and not the whole building.

Demolition of the extension was considered to be the most pragmatic option by the city council following a recent fire which caused extensive damage to the buildings more modern annex.

The city council also informed the parish council they are continuing to look for the most appropriate route to enabling a new user or owner for the site.

The parish council say they have heard nothing from the city council regarding an earlier 12 week consultation exercise to help determine the future of the building.

Cofton Hackett Parish Council has arranged a meeting with representatives of Birmingham City Council later in September, where the parish council hopes to include representatives from the Lickey Hills Society and other interested parties.

The parish council has confirmed they will continue to provide updates on the future of the historic site.
