WEST Mercia Police are urging youngsters to apply for its latest cadet programme, starting in September 2024.

Those aged 16 to 18 have a chance to gain new skills and qualifications through the forces cadet scheme, which closes to applicants on March 14.

As a West Mercia Police cadet you will receive a unique insight into policing, meet with specialist police teams and be in with the chance of supporting officers at community events and on police operations.

Applicants will join one of five local cadet units where you will be issued with a cadet uniform and attend weekly sessions from September 2024.

The forces cadet units are based in North Worcestershire (Bromsgrove Police Station), South Worcestershire (Worcester HQ, Hindlip), Herefordshire (Ledbury Police Station) Shropshire (Shrewsbury Police Station), and Telford & Wrekin (Malinsgate Police Station).

The scheme actively encourages young people from all parts of the community regardless of educational needs, challenging behaviour or disability.

Cadets learn about the law, police procedures, and specialist units developing skills that police officers need such as communication, team working and understanding of community issues.

They may also take part in police events, letter drops and in some areas, test purchasing for alcohol and cigarettes as well as social action projects.

Weekly sessions can also include team building exercises, physical exercise/ activities, class room based sessions, lessons from the VPC, visiting Speakers, practical Scenarios, lessons delivered by the Cadets, online lessons and e-learning.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “Cadets is a perfect opportunity to meet new people, make friends, improve your life skills and volunteer in your community.

“You will gain a lot from the Police Cadets, aside from experience, and being able to put it on your CV will make you stand out to any employer.”
