Bromsgrove: The Quaintest of Quaint

The Town of Bromsgrove is a charming community that can be found in Worcestershire in the United Kingdom.

It has a population of around twenty-nine thousand people and serves as the principal town in the even more charming Bromsgrove area of the United Kingdom.

In the middle ages, it served as a little market town, and in the early modern period, the manufacturing of cloth was the principal industry there. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it became an important centre for the manufacturing of nails and other types of industrial equipment.

However, this is not the only reason why the city of Bromsgrove is remarkable; during the 64-year period between 1782 and 1846, its racecourse was one of the most renowned in the country. This is one of the reasons why the town is famous.

The town’s race track has a rich history of playing home to a wide variety of sporting events and competitions, including equestrian events.

I’ll be covering this history in more detail later on in this article.

The Notion of Horse Racing

Taking a quick detour to talk about the notion of one of the oldest sports betting industries of all time, that being the betting of Horse racing. This has been around for centuries, ever since the 1600’s.

This act of sports betting today has evolved to online sportsbooks, where one can bet horse race, from the comfort of their own home and can even watch these sports live.

Four hundred years on, and betting on horse racing is still one of the most popular to this day, and has even become relatively well-known in popular culture, being used as a plot point within TV shows such as The Sopranos.

The History of Bromsgrove Races

When one is talking about some of the major historical races that went down during the 1700’s and 1800’s within the Bromsgrove racetrack, there are two principal races that one should look at.

The first ones happened in 1782, between the 29th and 30th of July, known as the Bromsgrove plate, which spanned four miles, and the Bromsgrove 2 mile sweepstake, which took place on those two dates respectively.

Mr. Lowe’s Sweet Robin was victorious in both of the heats of the Bromsgrove Plate, when she prevailed against the 2/1 On shot London Sal.

On the same day, Mr. Sander’s Cicero colt triumphed against Slender and Chance to capture first place in the two-mile sweepstakes race.

Throughout the following 60 years, there were sporadic meetings held, with the longest stretch of competition occurring in the 1840s.

There however, was a hitch, in the year 1842 where the races had been harshly called “inferior quality racing” by newspapers all around, something which may have contributed to the races subsequently closing for good in 1846.

Bromsgrove Racecourse Today, and Closing Statements

The Bromsgrove Racecourse is now known as Lickey Park, and it is both a well-liked destination for tourists and a popular park for residents to visit for a variety of leisure activities.

It is unfortunate that many of the Bromsgrove Racecourse’s features have been lost to the passage of time, and the general public does not have access to a great deal of information regarding the racecourse’s history.

It is a shame that such a prominent location has been lost to time in such an unceremonious manner.
