As I’m planning to visit USA this year with my youngest son Jay to celebrate our landmark 50th and 21st birthdays I started to think of various dishes to look out for.

As Miami is one of the places we are stopping and with a huge cultural and culinary association with Cuba I decided to create my own version of the famous Cuban Sandwich.

To be honest looking at different recipes for this dish I realised that variations changed from area to area and state to state…..so until I actually get there and try for myself I’m going along with my Birmingham version of the Cuban sandwich.

Cuban Sandwich Birmingham Style

Ingredients

Four Slices of bread

Yellow mustard

Gammon ham or thick slices of ham

Sliced Swiss cheese

30g unsalted butter

Method

1. Take your bread and very slightly toast them.

2. Spread the mustard on the toast. Add the ham and cheese.

3. Press gently to form a sandwich.

4. In a frying pan add a small knob of butter at a time and gently fry each sandwich separately until golden and the cheese is oozing out.

Serve and enjoy.
