Let's raise a toast to When We are Married - a superb show with plenty of laugh out loud moments

THERE was plenty of love in the room for JB Priestley’s When We are Married which was superbly staged by a very talented cast.

After a gentle scene-setting start, this piece gathers pace fast and a lot of incident ensues even though it is all primarily set in one sitting room.

It centres around three couples who all married on the same day and are had all gathered to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary until certain things come to light.

The play also, as it progresses through numerous twists and turns, poses a few social and life questions, especially ‘What would you do if you could have your time again……’

Tam Weir as Alderman Joseph Helliwell was fantastic with plenty of comedy created through some brilliantly delivered lines, facial expressions and mannerisms.

Likewise Melanie Brown as Maria Helliwell and Jan Millet-Weir as Clara Soppitt also impressed with their stage presence.

But the performances of the evening went to Ian Thompson as newspaper photographer Henry Ormonroyd and Chloe Halsall as maid Ruby Birtle. Both were firm favourites of the audience and the scene which threw the pair of them together when he was intoxicated led to the most laugh out loud moments.

Ian Thompson also directed this impressive production.

And, despite numerous scenarios developing and various misdemeanours, the piece does have a kind of feelgood ending and the show is well worth a watch.

Special mention also has to go to Guy Radforth who stepped in as Herbert Sobbit and played the character soundly.

The remaining performances of When We are Married take place at the Norbury Theatre tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday.
