Gordon Hendricks' Stripped Back delights Artrix crowd

A PACKED crowd at Bromsgrove’s Artrix clapped and sang along and cheered when Gordon Hendricks took to the stage.

The former Elvis impersonator, who won Stars in Your Eyes in 2005, has stepped out of the jumpsuits and other King regalia with his new show ‘Stripped Back’.

The majority of the material he performed was still by Elvis, but as the title of the show suggests, there were different arrangements and the music was scaled back.

On the stage were three backing singers, a pianist with a grand piano, an acoustic guitarist and a bass player, as well as Gordon.

In between the songs, the cheeky chappy from Stoke had plenty of chat with the audience, from observational comedy moments to almost naughty banter – and the crowd loved every minute.

With his honest, endearing character – he opened up halfway through about how nervous he was about taking to the stage without the Elvis gear – you can see how he has achieved such a solid fan bass.

He had no problem filling out the 301-capacity Artrix – his biggest crowd to date with this show.

Among the highlights were beautiful versions of In The Ghetto, Slowly But Surely, The Beatles’ Something and the Everly Brothers’ All I Have to Do is Dream and Crying in the Rain.

And his upbeat version of I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You, which was closer to the UB40 one than the Elvis one, he brought the curtain down on a fantastic evening of entertainment lasting almost two-and-a-half-hours.

The show is well worth a watch, especially for Elvis fans.

It would have been good to have seen some of the songs scaled back even further, maybe a section with just Gordon, the backing singers and the acoustic guitar. The vocallists produced some wonderful harmonies in the cover of The Beatles’ Help and it would have been good to hear more of that.

Gordon returns to Bromsgrove’s Artrix on October 18 and 19 as Elvis and again on December 8 with a Christmas show.
