ALVECHURCH dropped back into the relegation zone after Ian Long’s side were beaten 3-1 at home by title-chasing Nuneaton Borough.

Church fell behind to two goals from veteran midfielder Kyle Storer before Jamie Soule halved the deficit only for Scott McManus to settle the game late on at Lye Meadow.

The result means Alvechurch sit 19th in the Southern League Premier Central table, one place and one point from safety with six games in hand on the team above them.

Stalwart defender and captain Jamie Willets departed for league leaders Tamworth last week having played 210 games for the club during a seven-year spell.

And Nuneaton took the lead on 14 minutes when Storer fired a low free-kick into the left corner of the goal.

Storer, who joined Nuneaton from National League side Solihull Moors in January, repeated the trick six minutes later with another free-kick into the right corner to leave Church stunned.

The home side halved the deficit on 36 minutes as Soule scored his first goal for the club when he converted on the rebound after Jed Abbey’s initial effort was saved.

And Church almost drew level when Danny Waldron was superbly denied by Borough goalkeeper Tony Breeden following a mazy run.

However, Nuneaton eventually sealed the points on 79 minutes when McManus ghosted in to finish from Storer’s corner.

Alvechurch are next in action at home to Mickleover TONIGHT (Tuesday, February 7) with kick-off at 7.45pm at Lye Meadow.
