A SPECIAL ceremony to those who died and worked during Covid-19 was held in Sanders Park.

Councillors and members of the public mustered at 11.30am for a moment of reflection and plaque reveal on November 29.

The service offered some a moment to think of memories of ones they lost due to the pandemic.

Coun Adrian Kriss said: “Covid does affect all of us in the community and personally – even though I am a councillor – I have been affected.

“My aunt, who was 93, died of covid, and she survived the holocaust and came over on the Kindertransport.

“Unfortunately, within a year, her nursing home contracted it, she passed away and unfortunately none of us could attend her funeral – it was very very difficult.”

The ceremony was led by Coun Rod Laight, who said a few words on the impact the pandemic had on everyone’s lives and a tree was planted next to the plaque.

“It has been a very emotive time over the past two years, and no family was untouched.

“It is a very poignant moment and a very important memorial for us to pay our respects.”

Labour’s Coun Peter McDonald added: “It is something we need to do to make sure future generations never forget that a number of people sacrificed their lives to be key workers so we could keep living – if it wasn’t for those people, we would be around.”
