Stoke Prior Bowls club kicked off charity walkathon

STOKE Prior Crown Green Bowls Club was proud and privileged to host the start of a walkathon to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease research and the Leeds-based Rob Burrow Centre.

The trek, which got under way at Stoke Prior Country Club – where the teams are based – will see a group of crown green bowlers walk more 280 miles to 14 different clubs in 14 counties in 14 days.

During the fortnight, the team will journey through the Black Country, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Wales, Cheshire, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Lancashire and Merseyside, ending up at Fleetwood Bowling Club – where the national championships are held – on September 17.

The event was organised by the Mel Evans MBE Foundation – Mel was a stalwart of crown green bowls, receiving an MBE for his services to the game but he lost his fight to the disease a couple of years ago.

Now his partner Lynn Pritchett is fund-raising in his memory.

Stoke Prior was selected as the start and be the representative club for Worcestershire because it is the most southerly crown green in the country.

All greens in the south are flat and for lawn bowls, a slightly different game.

Several members of the Stoke Prior Club turned up to wave the walkers on their way and make a small donation before their next stop in the West Midlands at Somers Bowls Club in Halesowen.

People can visit donate.giveasyoulive.com/fundraising/walkathon-for-mnd to donate to the cause.
