Spate of car crime at south Birmingham railway stations prompts British Transport Police warning

DRIVERS who park their vehicles in railway station car parks across South Birmingham have been warned to be vigilant after a spate of crime.

British Transport Police (BTP) is reminding people to think about the safety of their cars and their belongings left inside them.

Since June there has been a number of incidents at a handful of stations, including Northfield, Kings Norton and Yardley Wood, along with Rowley Regis.

Crimes have included seven thefts of vehicles and four thefts from vehicles which has prompted BTP to join forces with West Midlands Police to carry out operations.

Officers are stepping up patrols, liaising with the public and reassuring passengers.

The police are encouraging drivers to consider additional security measures for their vehicles when parking, including steering locks and engine immobilisers – especially those with more desirable high-performance vehicles – to try and deter thieves.

Local Policing Inspector Paul Finlayson said: “We understand the concern and frustration these crimes cause to individuals.

“In order to robustly tackle these crimes we need you to help us, by being the eyes and ears in the community and report any suspicious activity at station carparks immediately.

“We are continually working closely with local forces and specialist roads policing units to tackle vehicle crime.

“Those who commit the crimes can expect to be caught or woken by early morning police raids for their actions.”

Anyone who sees anything suspicious should text BTP on 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40.
