A CAMPAIGN to put together festive hampers for families and people in need on one of the most deprived areas in the country has raised £10,019.
It means 100 Christmas packages have been handed out to those living on the Cockhill estate in Rubery.
Last week volunteers gathered at Deelands Hall – at the centre of the community – to put the hampers together.
They started wrapping at 1pm and finished around 11pm.
Enough cash was raised by the drive to also pay for a visit from Father Christmas for local children and will fund an Easter party with chocolate eggs in 2022.
As well as donations, several events were organised to generate the cash, including a jumble sale and a charity auction.
Some people on the estate also received cash to buy a turkey and St Chad’s Church vicar Rev Claire Turner gave £50 food vouchers to families in need on the Cockhill estate.
Bernie McFall, who works for Trident Reach which runs Deelands Hall, said she was delighted.
“I think in the whole country nobody has beaten the amount of food, presents and donations that have been afforded to this community.
“I want to say the biggest thank you to everyone who has made this year really special.”
