Councillor hits out at vandals who damaged play equipment at Rubery park

A RUBERY councillor has hit out at vandals who have damaged play equipment at Brook Road Park.

Coun Peter McDonald spoke out after the discovery which happened during a site visit.

Seats had been unscrewed making them unsafe.

Coun McDonald said: “It beggars belief how this could have been carried out directly in line and very close to a CCTV camera.

“It is obvious that the cameras in the park are not being monitored and these mindless yobs are able to destroy the play equipment knowing full well they are not being watched over.”

He added as well as being a ‘massive shame’ play equipment was being ruined by a small minority. He also expressed fears a child could have been injured by using the damaged equipment.

Bromsgrove District Council officers have already started to take action to rectify the situation but accused the authority of not regularly checking the play equipment, adding ‘they are failing in their duty of care’.

“The council must monitor our play areas and carry out regular checks before someone is seriously injured.”

Ruth Bamford, Bromsgrove District Council’s head of planning, regeneration and leisure services, said: “It’s always disappointing when someone decides to damage play equipment.

“Problems will most often occur between our regular proactive checks and repairs, which we do across all our many parks and play areas.

“For that reason, we also rely on residents who use the parks to tell us about problems so we can come out and fix them.”

She urged anyone who felt there was a problem with play equipment to call the council on 01527 64252 to report it.
