WEST Mercia Police have confirmed that a man who died after having a medical episode at the wheel while driving in Birmingham was a serving off-duty police officer based in Bromsgrove.

The incident happened around 5.20pm on Saturday at the junction of Tyburn Road and Stoneyhurst Road in Erdington and led to a crash.

West Midlands Ambulance Service, which sent four ambulances and other resources to the scene, said they found the driver in a critical condition.

Advanced life support was administered immediately but, despite crews’ best efforts, nothing could be done to save him.

The other three patients, a man and two women, who were passengers in the car, had sustained potentially serious injuries and were taken to Heartlands Hospital for further treatment.

West Mercia Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Damian Barratt said: “The circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated by our colleagues at West Midlands Police but it is believed that the officer suffered a medical episode prior to the collision.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends and colleagues.”
