Bromsgrove Indoor Bowling Club to hold open day after £50,000 Sport England funding

BROMSGROVE Indoor Bowls Club is expanding thanks to a £50,000 grant from Sport England’s ‘Return to Play’ Community Asset Fund.

The club on Austin Road, opposite Morrisons, is building an extra changing room which will ensure bowlers can socially distance as the sport returns to normal.

And the club will be holding an open weekend for anyone who wants to find out more about the sport.

That will take place between 10am and 12pm and 1.30pm and 4pm on July 31 and August 1 so people can have a go on the green and at some other fun bowling activities.

Club chairman Ray Kellard is looking forward to welcoming potential new bowlers and families and friends of current and former players to the new-look club so they can see the improvements which have been made during the lockdown.

These include internal decoration, a display wall, a fresh air circulation system and revamped toilets.

There will also be an opportunity for people to win free annual membership (worth £45) and to sign up for free taster sessions and coaching where needed.

Although indoor bowling is largely a winter sport, the club opens during the summer for eight two-hour sessions for players who want to practise or play competitively in summer leagues.

While bowling has been restricted during the lockdown, bosses anticipate the facility being able to re-open fully on Monday, July 19, in good time for the open weekend.

Just before Christmas, Mark Dawes, approached the club for practice time on a rink as his local club was closed.

He travelled down from Manchester to ‘roll up’ on Bromsgrove’s rinks, and in January became World Singles Champion.
