Age UK Bromsgrove, Redditch and Wyre Forest lays down sustainable fashion challenge to shoppers

STAFF at Age UK shops in Bromsgrove, Redditch and Wyre Forest are challenging people to think more sustainably and creatively when it comes to fashion.

Age UK BRWF said its charity shops had always been fantastic places for good quality and affordable clothes but, with increasing concerns about the environment, more people are now looking for sustainable fashion.

Figures estimate the UK throws away 350,000 tonnes of good quality clothes each year.

Since re-opening in April, Age UK BRWF’s eight shops have been involved in several schemes to help promote the benefits of ‘pre-loved’ clothing and to encourage more people to visit their local charity shops.

The #RetailSuperheroesChallenge saw shops go head-to-head with one another to see which shop could create the best ‘themed outfit’ – from spring fashion to an outfit to wear to the cinema.

Those creations were showcased on the charity’s social media pages with people urged to vote in a Facebook poll for their favourite one.

The next challenge sees the retail team search for an ‘upcycling retail superhero’ in each shop’s local community.

The Superhero will be given a £10 Age UK BRWF credit note to acquire items from their charity shop, which they can then (with the support of the shop team) upcycle/ rework to create a new outfit or item.

The outfit will then be showcased in their shop and on the charity’s social media and website pages and each shop’s outfits will then compete against one another, in a public vote.

The winning superhero will be announced on August 2, with the winner receiving a voucher from the Brenda Killigrew Sewing Studio, a voucher from Nature’s Intention and an ‘Afternoon Tea for Two’ at Victoria Plums Kitchen.

To help illustrate the idea and provide inspiration, the team at Bromsgrove’s Church Street shop have shown different ways a pair of pre-loved could be transformed to provide a new unique look.

Every item bought from Age UK BRWF’s shops help raise funds and make a difference to those over 50 living in North Worcestershire – for example by maintaining the free information and advice service.

The closing date for people to become the ‘Superhero’ is tomorrow (Saturday) with the challenge running throughout July.
