THE Bromsgrove Labour leader has come under fire for calling Charford Residents’ Association (CRA) ‘the crap party’.

Councillor Peter McDonald used the alleged slur during a motion on anti-Semitism at full council last week.

The important motion, introduced by CRA leader Coun Michael Thompson, asked Bromsgrove District Council to unequivocally adopt the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism.

Speaking on the issue, Coun McDonald said: “The Labour Party, the Lib Dems and the Conservative Party have already publicly signed up to this definition.

“The only political group, and to say its name for short – the crap party – is the only one which hasn’t publicly stated to have signed up to this.”

Coun McDonald finished by telling Coun Thompson there is only ‘two things’ he doesn’t like about him: his face.

In what was a clear reference to Coun Thompson being two-faced, the CRA leader said it wasn’t surprising as Coun McDonald is known for insulting his own party members.

Chair of the meeting, Coun Andrew Beaumont, was criticised by Coun Thompson for allowing the residents of Charford ‘to be referred to as crap’.

“You stood by and said nothing,” he said.

“It seems to be one rule for Coun McDonald and one rule for everyone else.”

Coun McDonald denied calling the people of Charford ‘crap’, instead insisting it was an acronym for the party which was formed earlier this year.

The bad blood between the two councillors, who once worked side by side before Coun Thompson left the Labour Party, overshadowed what was considered by all parties to be a sensitive and important issue.

Before the motion was backed, Coun Till added: “On such a touching subject, I’m really dissapointed that there has been name calling and ridiculousness.

“As a member of the Equality Task Group, to see another member in that group name calling is absolutely shameful.”
