A MAN who assaulted a police officer and spat in the back of a West Mercia van has been handed 66 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £219.14.
It happened when police attended a domestic incident involving Nadarajah Aingkaran in Oakwood Road, Hollywood, on May 23.
The officer was attacked and his glasses were broken during the assault – £129 of the compensation was to replace them and £88.14 was also awarded to cover of the specialist cleaning of the cage in the police van.
Aingkaran was handed the sentence after he pleaded guilty at Kidderminster Magistrates Court to two counts of criminal damage and one of assaulting an emergency worker.
He was also given a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement where he will be required to attend appointments.
Supt Mark Colquhoun: “Sentencing is a matter for the court and in the past number of months assaults on police officers and other emergency workers have increased substantially.
“Where officers are assaulted we will always seek to prosecute those responsible in order that the courts can take advantage of the new sentencing powers, which reflect societal anger and concern at the small minority who attack members of the emergency service performing their duties.”
West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “It’s disappointing to see this sentence being handed to a criminal who has assaulted an emergency worker.
“I have long campaigned for tougher sentencing for the minority that assault frontline workers, and it’s only when sentences are robust enough to make people think twice, that will we start to see a reduction in these types of crimes.”
