TONIGHT the skies will be filled with ‘shooting stars’ when the annual Lyrids Meteor Shower is visible from the Midlands.
The dramatic display, which is active between April 16 and 25 every year, should be visible across Worcestershire and Birmingham between 8pm and the early hours of the morning.
In dark areas around ten to 20 meteors-an-hour could be visible.
You will not need any special equipment or specialist skills to see the shower, although a clear sky and plenty of patience will be required.
Your eyes could need 15 to 20 minutes to get used to the dark and viewers should make sure they are dressed in warm and comfortable clothing as you may need to be outside for some time to see the spectacle.
With coronavirus restrictions in place, people are warned not to drive anywhere specifically to see the Lyrids but to view them in their local areas.
The Lyrids – named after the Lyra constellation – are one of the oldest recorded meteor showers and some documents detail they were viewed more than 2,000 years ago.
