Older people's plea over speeding cars in Leach Green Lane

TERRIFIED senior citizens say they are too frightened to cross a busy road due to speeding cars.

The pensioners say there have been no end of accidents on Leach Green Lane, a major feeder road to the A38 junction on the border of Rubery and Rednal.

Now they have started a petition demanding action before someone gets killed.

One resident Martha Kidd said: “There was another crash on Thursday last week.

“It is almost impossible to cross the road.

“We are elderly and we simply cannot get out.

“We’ve complained to the highways authority and were told they couldn’t do anything because ‘no one has been killed’ – which is a terrible thing to say – that someone has to die before they lift a finger.”

A further problem is the number of parked cars lining the busy thoroughfare.

“It’s impossible to see the oncoming traffic – but you can hear them all right, racing along.

“Something needs to be done.”

Angry at the lack of action Martha and fellow residents along Leach Green Lane have organised a petition which they intend to present to their local councillor, Adrian Delaney.

Coun Delaney told the Standard the road had been a concern of his for some time.

“I have been to Leach Green Lane with engineers to look at what can be done.

“We’re hoping to launch a consultation after Christmas to ask residents if they would like to see a 20mph zone implemented around St Jame’s Catholic School.

“The speed limit would also cover the bottom of Leach Green Lane which would be fantastic for locals living in the area.”
