Putting the spotlight on careers in journalism at South Bromsgrove High School

A PANEL of experienced and student journalists gave careers advice to pupils at South Bromsgrove High School at a special event last Monday.

Among those taking part were BBC sports correspondent Pat Murphy, BBC Sunday Politics Series Editor Nick Watson and Bromsgrove and Droitwich Standard editor Tristan Harris.

They were joined on the panel by Eve Watson, currently studying in her final year of a journalism degree at Nottingham Trent University, and Matthew Bedford reading sports journalism at Derby.

Mr Clark, careers lead and organiser, said: “It was great to have such a wide variety of experience represented and honoured to have such a distinguished broadcaster as Pat to give his time to the school.

“Also for journalists such as Nick and Tristan to take time out from their busy schedules and for ex-students, Eve and Matt, to pass on their own experiences.

“The students really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about journalism as a career.”

Students were then invited to take part in a question and answer session.

Former South Bromsgrove High student Eve added: “I hope this has inspired some students to pursue a career in the media.

“It was great to hear what the more experienced panellists had to say about a journalism career and has hopefully sparked students’ interest.”
