Shar-pei in need of home from Frankley RSPCA after her owner passed away

AN APPEAL has been launched to find a new home for a distinctive dog whose owner passed away, writes Sophie Nixon.

Lover the four-year-old Shar-pei, is currently up for adoption at the RSPCA Newbrook Animal Centre in Frankley.

Staff say she is a ‘Lover’ in name and nature but has had a bit of a ‘ruff’ time lately.

She was suffering from a painful eye condition called entropion, where the eyelashes turn inwards and scratch the eye.

Kelly Legg said despite the pain and discomfort the dog was in, Lover was happy to say hello to new people, although on occasions she could be a little shy and could be quickly ‘won over’.

Lover has now undergone successful eye surgery and is pain-free with good vision.

During her stay Lover has been a ‘model patient’ and the nurses loved looking after her.

Lover enjoys walks and ‘does a little excited dance’ when getting ready to go out.

Staff describe her as ‘playful and cheeky’ and say she enjoys fuss and attention.

Anyone wanting to adopt her should be familiar with the breed as they are prone to a condition flaring up called ‘shar-pei fever’.

The illness is currently under control with antibiotics but Lover would need someone who is educated or familiar with the symptoms so they knew what to look out for.

Call 0300 123 8585 or visit rspca.org.uk/local/-/rspca/birmingham-animal-centre/ for more information on Lover and adopting her.
