BROMSGROVE MP and Home Secretary Sajid Javid has paid tribute to Theresa May who announced this morning she would be quitting her role as Prime Minister on June 7.

Mr Javid, who is the bookies’ seventh favourite to succeed her, told The Standard: “The PM has served this country with commitment and courage.

“As a dedicated public servant,  she tried her absolute best for the British people.

“She deserves our deepest gratitude and I am proud to have worked with her.”

Posting on Twitter he added: “Nobody could have worked harder or had a greater sense of public duty than the Prime Minister.

“Her dedication in taking our country forward has been monumental.”

Pressure had been mounting on her to step aside, particularly over the last two days with many of her own party unhappy with her redrawn EU Withdrawal Bill.

And this morning she announced she would be leaving at the start of next month.

In her speech Mrs May said she had been proud to serve her country in a role she had wanted her whole life.

She added, despite her best efforts, she regretted she could not get her EU deal through Parliament.

Although not all candidates have been confirmed for the country’s top job, it has been reported there could be more than ten contenders.

According to the latest betting odds Bromsgrove’s Sajid Javid is currently the bookmakers’ seventh favourite behind Penny Mordaunt, Andrea Leadsom, Jeremy Hunt, Michael Gove, David Lidington, Dominic Raab and favourite Boris Johnson.
